Ideally situated between the metropolitan areas of Milwaukee and Madison, Jefferson County offers a pleasant mixture of urban and rural life. Originally Jefferson County was a part of Milwaukee County, being separated from Milwaukee County by an act of the territorial council December 7, 1836. It was set off as a separate town for judicial purposes by an act, approved January 2, 1838, and polls established at the houses of Nathaniel Finch, David H. Sergeant, and George J. Goodhue. The "town" referred to was in reality an election precinct, set by the legislature. The four precincts into which the county was divided were Bark River, which comprised the four south-southeast townships or one fourth of the county, Finch, Jefferson and Watertown.

According to the Wisconsin Historical Atlas of 1875, the full organization of the county was accomplished in February 1839 with election of officers the following April, on the second Monday of the month. The county was then made a part of the second Judicial District and courts were directed to be held at the county seat. The population of the county at the time of its organization was estimated to be about 468. The county was heavily timbered with undrained marsh lands along the rivers. People were transferred across the rivers by ferries maintained at a few points, one in Fort Atkinson.

Today, Jefferson County, Wisconsin, encompasses the cities of Cambridge, Jefferson, Fort Atkinson, Lake Mills, Palmyra, Waterloo, Watertown and Whitewater as well as the village of Johnson Creek.

Jefferson County, Wisconsin, has many historic sites - dating back to the early 1800’s - that reflect the rich history and architecture of the past. Historical sites of interest include: the famous Octagon House and America’s First Kindergarten in Watertown; the one-of-a-kind National Dairy Shrine and Hoard Historical Museum, the Panther Intaglio mound, and the Old Fort in Fort Atkinson; the archaeologically significant Indian Mounds and Trail County Park along Lake Koshkonong; the Jefferson Historical Museum; and the Aztalan Historical Museum adjacent to the Aztalan State Park.
