Blanchardville’s Story
The Village of Blanchardville, Wisconsin, straddles Lafayette and Iowa counties but is considered a part of Lafayette County, since the larger portion of the village's population resides there. An early mining town formerly known as Zarahamia, today's villlage was re-amed after its first official U.S. postmaster, Alvin Blanchard, Blanchardville lies on the Pecatonica River.
Alongside the bridge over the Pecatonica River residents camp, canoe and fish. The "Village in the Valley" was the smallest town ever chosen to become a Wisconsin Main Street Program, with a primary focus of historic preservation. Blanchardville’s early history had a Mormon influence. A small group of Mormons fleeing Nauvoo, Illinois, following the murder of Prophet Joseph Smith came to the area hoping to establish a permanent communiy. Church leader Samuel Horner founded Zarahelma on the banks of the Pecatonica River in 1844. He dammed the river and built a water-powered gristmill. But, in 1855, Alvin Blanchard bought the mill. The
Mormon colony disappeared soon after – many of their graves can be found in the old section of Graceland Cemetery – and the community took the name of Blanchardville in 1857.
