"The Greatest Show on Earth", the P.T. Barnum Circus, was founded in Delavan, Wisconsin, in 1871. Delavan (DELL - ih - vinn') was a major circus town for much of the 1800's, predating even Wisconsin statehood in 1841, eventually merging with the Ringling Brothers circus, founded and headquartered several counties away in Baraboo, Wisconsin. The International Clown Hall of Fame organized in Delavan in 1987 and operated a museum in the community until moving to Milwaukee a decade later. The popular and luxurious Lake Lawn Resort, which lies on the shores of Lake Delavan, can trace its history back to those circus days.

The community, named after Edward Cornelius Delavan, temperance leader in Albany, New York, is no stranger to world famous residents, including Andies Candies, maker of Andes Chocolate Mints, set up shop in Delavan in 1921. Owned by Tootsie Roll Industries since 2000, the popular after-dinner mints are still manufactured in Delavan to this day. Delavan, Wisconsin, is also home to no fewer than six structures designed by the celebrated Wisconsin architect Frank Lloyd Wright. And Gary Burghoff, better known as Radar O'Reilly from the popular 1970s sitcom, M*A*S*H, began his acting career in Delavan, Wisconsin, as a student at Delavan-Darien High School.

While growing in both population and commerce, today Delavan, Wisconsin, remains a quiet and afffluent exurb in Walworth County near Milwaukee, along the I-94 commercial corridor that joins Milwaukee and Madison.
