La Crosse, Wisconsin, is a city of 52,000 located in La Crosse County in western Wisconsin, along the Mississippi River and at the confluence of the La Crosse and Black Rivers. La Crosse ("the cross") was the site of an 18th century fur trading post and medical stop for traders traveling down the Mississippi River. At the time it was called Prairie La Crosse. Established in 1842, serious development brought eager settlers from New York, Ohio and Vermont to build grist and sawmills to service the expanding rail industry. Those earliest settlers were soon joined by German and Norwegian immigrants drawn to the expansive pine groves spread throughout western Wisconsin.
